Age of Chaucer Summary

The age of Chaucer covers the period from 1340-1400. It was a period of transition and turbulence. This age was a meeting ground of two divergent periods- the old and the new, the Medieval and the Renaissance.

This period witnessed remarkable social, religious, and political changes.

It was in this period that, the crucial Hundred Years war between England and France took place. This war awakened English nationalism and gave rise to national consciousness.

The victories of Edward and the Black Prince of French soil during the Hundred Years ar gave a feeling of national pride and self-respect to the people of England.

This period marked the beginning of a new language and literature. English came to its own because of the greater works done by Chaucer, William Langland, and Wycliffe who wrote in English.

There was also the growth of trade and commerce. Feudalism was beginning to break down and features of the money economy came into being. The Church’s authority began to be questioned by reformers like Wycliffe.

In general, the Age of Chaucer witnessed a series of uprisings and agitations, which led to the churning of society and paved the way for a new society.
